NIST Emergency Status Notification is a site that provides instructions on how to be notified in the event of NIST delayed openings, closure and other emergency instructions. The site includes the phone numbers, local radio, and TV stations as well as instructions to subscribe to text alerts.

For schedule changes due to inclement weather, please check the home page of this site, call the NIST Status Line at 301-975-8000, or the Center at 301-975-2152. Our phone lines and website will be updated as new information becomes available.

Delayed Arrival – If NIST announces a delayed arrival (e.g., 2 hours), the Center will also delay opening by that amount. Example: Normal opening is 6:45 a.m. → With a 2-hour delay, the Center opens at 8:45 a.m.
Unscheduled Leave – When NIST announces “Unscheduled Leave,” the Center will open at 7:45 a.m.
Delayed Arrival-Unscheduled Leave (announced together) – The Center will delay opening by the number of hours announced. Example: 2-hour delay → Center opens at 8:45 a.m. If NIST sets a specific opening time (e.g., 11:00 a.m.), the Center will open 15 minutes earlier (10:45 a.m.).
Delayed Opening (closed with limited access) - Staff cannot enter campus until NIST officially opens. The Center will be fully operational about 30 minutes after NIST’s announced opening time. Please do not leave your child unless a staff member is present in the classroom to receive them.
Please note: Delayed Arrival and Unscheduled Leave are announced when weather and road conditions are potentially hazardous. These adjustments provide staff with safe travel time.

If NIST closes early due to weather or another emergency, the Center will close 30 minutes after NIST’s official closing time. Parents will be notified as soon as we receive confirmation from NIST. Please monitor weather conditions and NIST announcements so you can plan to pick up your child on time.
A late pick-up fee will apply:
First 5 minutes (or portion thereof) → standard late fee
After 30 minutes past NIST’s closing → additional per-minute charge
